Tutani Mugavazi

BORN:
1975

LIVES:
Mvurwi, Zimbabwe

PARENTS:
Tutani was influenced by his uncle, Francis Mugavazi, a first generation sculptor, although he had the full support of his father.

EARLY LIFE:
He enjoyed arts and crafts from a very young age, and enjoyed sanding and polishing his uncles sculptures. He was creating his own work by the age of 12. His father bought him his own set of tools when he was 13.

EDUCATION:
Completed secondary school education.

CAREER:
In 1992 Tutani and some other fellow artists formed a cooperative called the Gavazi Sculptors. In 1995 he discovered a Springstone mine in Mtorashanga and moved there. He created the artist to artist program with fellow artist Jill Latham, and after that he moved to Mvurwi to help establish another cooperative known as the Mvurwi Arts Centre.

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
Tutanis work alternates between abstract and representational topics. Including strong women forms and torsos, and playful birds.
