Take Off by Martin Barratt

This extremely well executed bronze by Martyn Barratt is a simple subject matter that has been conceptually mastered to form a beautiful piece that explores the idea of contrast between weight and subject. The composition and refined linear detailing all adds to the suggested subject of a feather.

Whilst at first glance the piece is a soft curl with curvaceous waves at the sides, the piece soon unravels to a solid bronze mass of sharp line and great weight. The manner in which this piece can manipulate light adds to its powerful play on contrasting elements. By using light to catch on bear bronze strips throughout the feather allows the audience to still react to it as such whilst the contrasting play with curving to create barriers to the light can cause large shadowed areas which create a menacing attitude which when coupled with the mass and harsh linear patterning the work starts to alter the subject entirely.
