Stanford Derere

BORN:
Born at Chapeyama Village Mokosa Mutoko, from a family of eight boys,

PARENTS:
Tagara and Ernesteria.

EARLY LIFE:
As a kid Stanford used to spend a lot of time playing with clay – this was the beginning of his interest in art. This was when he started tending to small plots of land for vegetables. When he started school the interest was more on drawing since he was unable to read. This was during the comic book era and he was getting more interested in drawing and painting.

EDUCATION:
Before joining the BAT Workshop, Stanford attended Peter Burgh School of Art, but unfortunately his work could not afford to pay for the fees. This was when he saw an advertisement about the BAT Workshop, of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 1995-86. Stanford specialised in painting and printmaking, after this he switched to sculpture, which he is still doing to this day, but he still likes to paint.

AWARDS:
In 1988 he was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for my piece ‘The Beekeeper’.
