Peter Thursby

BORN:
Born in Salisbury, Wiltshire. 1930 - 2011

PARENTS:
His father was an army officer.

EARLY LIFE:
Peters childhood was spent in Jamaica.

EDUCATION:
Educated at Bishop Wordsworth’s College, Salisbury. . Following his National Service in the Army, he studied at St Paul’s College, Cheltenham College of Art. Attending the life classes bought out his natural drawing skills and this laid sown the ideas for his first sculpture.

CAREER:
Peter produced his first piece of work in the wake of the Second World War. This was the time that new and brutal abstracts were just coming into being. Peters early work was aggressive and hard but with time a more human modernism took over. Thursby developed a symbolic style, giving figures a totemic and abstract appearance, fusing organic and mechanical forms but his later work was more refined, with elegant lines in aluminium and bronze.

AWARDS:
Peter won his first award in 1962 in Gloucester the exhibition was called 19 Young Sculptors

MEDIUMS USED IN WORK:
Aluminium, Bronze, cast concrete, stone, stainless steel and silver.

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
Abstract and figurative. His work for the public arena and corporate clients was muscular and magnificent in scale and presence, maturing into a style with interlocking ‘Borromean’ rings and powerful verticals.

EXHIBITIONS:
He exhibited widely throughout the West Country, and had a retrospective at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter in 2000.
