Nicola Axe

BORN:
February 8, 1967 in Clifton, Bristol

LIVES:
Nicola lives with her two children in the beautiful South Devon countryside surrounded by the colour green, with moors rivers and beaches close by.

PARENTS:
Neville Axe 1940-2014, Sandra Axe (née Scott) 1944.
Neville was very practical and artistic, drawing beautiful pencil portraits of his family, he seemed to be able to turn his hand to anything.

EARLY LIFE:
Many hours in her childhood were spent making, painting and drawing, full of ideas and always more interested in the cardboard box than its contents. Both parents encouraged Nicola’s creativity and hoped she would attend Art College.

EDUCATION AND CAREER:
Nicola attended Marlwood Comprehensive in Alveston, Thornbury.
After leaving school she misguidedly started a career in beauty therapy and hairdressing, hoping to work in theatre and television as a makeup artist. But disappointed with her choice, she began a career in retail with Laura Ashley and worked there happily for many years, moving to Glasgow in 1990.
In 1995 Nicola returned to Bristol and to study science, moving to Exeter in 1997 to begin a degree in Physics at Exeter University.
Here she met the father of her two children and, having given up her degree, immersed herself in that childhood state of wonder in her new role as a mother, reigniting her passion for creativity and making.
After the very difficult and painful separation from her partner in 2006, she struggled for a long time to make sense of things. And whilst yoga and meditation helped, her suffering lead Nicola to dig in the depths of her being for answers.
When the children started school, Nicola began art classes and found her gold in 2009 taking a carving course with sculptor Maria Moorhouse. Here she found her material, passion and a belief in herself she hadn't previously touch on. Stone carving became therapy, the place where she found herself, strength and the core of a new life. Nicola carves most days and has a wealth of ideas for future work to complete before she’s too old!

AWARDS:
First prize at the Showborough House art exhibition - June 2016

MEDIUMS USED IN WORK:
Various limestones, most frequently choosing Portland stone for its hardness, fine grain texture and whiteness. Incorporating crystals, fossils and handmade glass where relevant.
Nicola says “The material is challenging but the process is deeply fulfilling. It connects me to the earth and an ancient form of expression, creativity leading to the exploration of the self. “

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
Nicola loves to carve the human form and is frequently informed by interests in yoga, meditation and spirituality.
inspirations include the works of Modigliani and Rodin, as well as the sculptures of Angkor and Asian Buddhist art.
