The Acrobats

This iconic sculpture, arguably John’s most well-known and acclaimed piece was originally conceived during a trip to Greece in the 1970’s. Based on the original Olympian athletes dating back to the 8th century BC in ancient Greece, John started with a 16inch bronze maquette, which he then scaled up to a monumental scale. Being very practical, he ingeniously made a joint on the wrist of the upper acrobat, which is reinforced with a steel rod, making transport and erection relatively simple. The first cast was mounted at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Maui, Hawaii. There are another 7 examples around the world, one of which is located outside the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, Australia.
