James Doran-Webb

BORN:
James was born in UK in 1967 and spent his early childhood in Devon

LIVES:
He now lives in the Philippines and works full time in his studio along with his small support team.

PARENTS:
James’s parents owned an antiques restoration company

EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION:
James’s parents antiques restoration company took them and James across Europe and America where he was schooled before returning to London to take his ‘A’ levels at Davies Laing and Dick, Notting Hill Gate. While at college, he began his own venture in antiques with a stall at Portobello market. James began making models and miniature sculptures out of wood when he was a small boy as well as honing his skills by whittling, carving and refinishing antiques and cabinet making for his parents business.

CAREER:
An extended holiday to the Philippines instilled his love for this country and he made it the home for his company which designed and made a range of wooden objects, including fine furniture made out of salvaged wood from old demolished hardwood houses. These were sold in Europe and the USA. He is now a full-time driftwood sculptor.

AWARDS:

MEDIUMS USED IN WORK:
James participated in outdoor sports across the remotest parts of the Philippines and has extensive local knowledge of the largest islands that make up the archipelago. He has built up a small network of locals across the islands who gather driftwood found along the coast and riverbeds from a number of indigenous species, all dense enough to withstand years of exposure to extreme weathers, which creates the unusual and individual shapes we see in his sculptures. Along with a programme he has started called 80000 trees which plant a seedling for every kilo of driftwood collected and his current assistance to those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, James is truly passionate and active in giving back where he can.

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
James began designing driftwood furniture around 15 years ago which led to his experiments with driftwood animal sculptures. He draws on his extensive supply of driftwood to find the perfect shapes to create the movement and reality in his driftwood animal sculptures.

EXHIBITIONS:
James exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show, London each May where, in 2013, he was awarded the Director General’s Award for the best trade stand. He also holds a solo exhibition in the autumn, hosted by the Eton Contemporary Fine Art Gallery. His largest public work to date is a series of 3 galloping life size thoroughbreds that are now racing through the Flower Dome of Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.
