Cuthbert Tendai

BORN:
1966 in the rural district of Chikomba.

EARLY LIFE:
Cuthbert’s father was a carpenter who taught his carpentry skills whilst he was in high school. His mother was an artist who specialized in clay pot molding and Cuthbert praises his parents for his artistic style saying “Art is in my genes”.

CAREER:
Upon completing his high school education, he was employed by Chikomba Rural District Council as a school clerk but left due to the poor money. After that he moved to Chitungwaza, a small town close to Harare (Zimbabwe’s Capital), where he stayed with his brother Lovemore Tendai. Cuthbert and his brother worked together doing carpentry until 1989 when they went their separate ways.

He dabbled in office jobs but missed working with his hands so in 1993, he went back to his roots and worked doing carpentry for a kitchen cabinet making company. It was during this time that he began to learn how to sculpt. Whilst using his carpentry skills to sculpt and carve stone, he acquired the techniques he needed to become a fully-fledged stone carver. His talent blossomed and he became a full time artist specializing in stone sculpture, earning a living with his art.
