Brendan Hesmondhalgh

Lancashire, England, 1973

Brendan was educated at North East Wales Institute of Art and Design where he studied ceramics at degree level. He then transferred a sculptural ceramic course at Edinburgh College of Art.

Hesmondhalgh worked with children in art workshops and developed his own work for galleries and commission at Drumcroon Arts Centre then pursued his freelance career after a move to Yorkshire in 1998

He has won numerous awards, fellowships and prizes for his work, and as his work escalates from smaller scale garden sculpture to larger scale pieces, he has been selected for various private, public and corporate commissions.

Brendan works primarily in ceramic and creates bold animal designs that are often mounted on ceramic plinths. He uses a hand-building technique that deliberately cracks the surface of the clay. By pushing out a sheet of clay from the inside the surface breaks as it stretches. In this way wrinkles, textures folds can be readily incorporated into the shape. The wet flexible clay can be pushed out from the inside to form the fullness of a belly, the line of a rib or the undulation of a muscle. He also works with wax and his work is often cast into alternative materials, predominately bronze or bronze resin, sometimes cast iron.

Brendan's work has always been inspired by the different form, movement and characteristics of nature. Large life-like sculptures, encapsulating real essence of his subjects as he sees them through his own personal experiences.
