Andy Decomyn
BORN:
May 15th 1966 in Worcestershire
EDUCATION:
Andy studied at the Bourneville College of Art and South Staffordshire College before achieving a BA with honours degree at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design in 2000.
CAREER:
Hewas inspired by the realities of war, Andy created a sculpture entitled “Shot at Dawn” in memory of the 306 soldiers who were executed in World War I for military offences. He donated the sculpture to the families of the soldiers and this potent image played an important role in achieving an eventual pardon for these soldiers.
The publicity that arose from this piece resulted in other military commissions and enabled him to continue working in this genre, sculpting memorials for often forgotten groups of service personnel. He has also worked together with Acorns Hospice in his home town of Birmingham to create a life-sized sculpture of a child, and also with a Midlands primary school, for which he designed a magnificent sea-life sculpture.
