Andrew Stevens

EARLY LIFE:
At Art college I was lucky enough to have lunch with Henry Moore at his studio in Hertfordshire. Fired with enthusiasm, I came back with the intention of becoming a SCULPTOR. I worked on a large ‘Henry Moorish’ piece whilst doing the sculpture module and my tutor suggested that I finish it outside due to its size. I duly took it out, went on the Easter break and on my return discovered that the bin men had thought it was rubbish and had carted it off to the tip! I became a Photographer.

After a life time working in two dimensions I was given a bag of broken toys for one of my still life’s and came up with a three dimensional theme which developed into the MINOTAUR set of sculptures. Influenced by the Minotaur’s of the 1960’s artist, Michael Ayrton and the work of people like Roland Emmett I’ve tried to introduce an element of humour into my work, and produced pieces that I would like to own if I’d seen them in a gallery for sale.

EDUCATION:
Folkestone School of Art (Foundation) and 3 years at Manchester College of Art, School of Photography -DA(Manc). Andrew then worked freelance as well as becoming a Visiting Lecturer in Advertising Photography at Salford University; Wirral College of Art; Mid-Cheshire College of Art, and then Senior Lecturer in Visual Communications at Edinburgh Napier University aged just 24.

CAREER:
Whilst lecturing, Andrew got a MA, then PhD and went on to work all over the globe, shooting advert campaigns and Annual Reports, in over 20 countries. These included: Japan; Iraq; India; Singapore; the Canaries; all over the US and 12 countries in Western Europe, for clients like Vogue magazine; Sony Europe; Yamasaki Japan and the Foreign Office.

AWARDS:
Andrew been awarded Fellowships from the Royal Society of Art (FRSA); The British Institute of Professional Photographers (FBIPP) including their top award of the Jubilee Fellowship and Peter Gudgeon Gold Medal; and Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Designers (FCSD).

EXHIBITIONS:
His photography is in the permanent collection of the FCO; Manchester City Art Gallery and 2 prestigious US universities. Although only working in 3D for the past 3 years and being completely self-taught, he has had exhibitions of his work in Bristol, Farnham and Manchester and pieces are held in several private collections.
