After Antonio Canova

BORN:
1757 - 1822. Canova was born in northern Italy to a family of stonecutters and sculptors.

CAREER:
By the age of 14 Canova was an apprentice to a sculptor called Giuseppe Bernardi, they were based in Pagnano then moved to Venice. When Bernardi died in 1774 Canova started working in Bernardi’s nephew’s studio. In 1779 he took a tour of Italy where he saw great arts collections in Florence, Bologna, Naples and Rome. 1781 saw the opening of his studio in Rome. In Rome he was very much influenced by archaeologists and antiquarians. Throughout the 1780s – 1790s his reputation continued to grow. He completed many commissions in many different genres. Triumphant Perseus was modeled on the Vatican’s Apollo Beledere and heralded as the highlight of his papal collection. This sculpture was bought by Pope Pius VII in 1801 and became the first piece of modern art to entre the Vatican Collection. In recognition of his sculpture, Pius VII designated Canova Inspector General of Fine Arts of the Papal States, this post gave him authority over the Vatican museums and the export of the work of art from Rome. When Canova passed away, commemorations were held in Possagno, Venice and Rome, he was widely mourned and honored across the whole of Europe. The degree of his fame is evident in by the treatment of his corpse, his hand was preserved in Venice, his hear was placed in a tomb in Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
